Councelor/Therapist Questions Depression

How should a mentally ill person be convinced of his condition?

How should a person who is mentally ill be convinced of the fact that he is ill and requires treatment? My husband has depression and whenever I suggest therapy, he flips out on me and tells me that he doesn't need it. I'm at my wit's end, and completely frustrated with him. This is tearing our marriage apart and I love him and want to be with him, but it feels like he's pushing me away.

First of all, stop bringing up his illness. Secondly, you show him when he acts out. Then, you can suggest, not force, seeing a doctor. However, attend with him when he is ready. Tell him that it is something to improve your marriage.
First of all you will find changing another person,(who is in denial) will not change. You can only change yourself, either to educate yourself or learning coping mechanisms to balance your behavior in dealing with his depression. Let him know that changes in scenery, diet, and activity usually helps a depressed person feel better. Counseling helps many cope with situations while they work through their depression.
