How to help anemic son?

My 12 year old son was diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia. What treatments are there?

Depending on what caused the iron deficiency (e.g. not eating enough iron rich foods? chronic bleeding? abnormally high amounts of milk intake? chronic inflammation?), these elements can be modified. And iron treatment is recommended.
It is unusual for a 12 year old to be anemic. If this is of new onset it is not likely to be genetic. I would check his stool to make sure he is not bleeding. If no cause is found he could be treated wth iron pills over the counter. If the problem does not resolve in 2-3 months I would have him see a pediatric hematologist.
