Plastic Surgeon Questions Hair transplant

Is plastic surgery done with anesthesia?

Will I be given anesthesia during my hair transplant? Is it really necessary?

The type of anesthesia used for hair transplant is really a choice that the patient and doctor can make together. If a patient wants local anesthesia, it certainly can be done but the patient will feel all the injections and it will be quite tedious since the surgery can take hours. Surgery can also be done with local anesthesia and mild sedation given orally such as Valium and Percocet. Intravenous Sedation can be used as well as more complete forms of anesthesia but are generally not necessary for hair transplant surgery
Hair transplantation often takes many hours due to the tedious work involved. It would be difficult and painful to undergo this as a patient without any anesthesia. The kind of anesthesia used (local vs general) is surgeon preference.
Depending on what you are having done and the details of your procedure it may be. It is important to discuss with your board-certified plastic surgeon to understand the reason and details around your procedure.
Most hair transplants are done with local anesthesia, sometimes with additional oral anti-anxiety medication given.
Most of hair transplantation does not need anesthesia but while you are getting numb it is best to have a slight amount of twilight sedation so that you do not feel the discomfort of the injections. This can be done without any breathing tubes placed and is only for your comfort.
For hair transplants, which are office procedures, you will likely receive local anesthesia injections at both the donor and recipient sites, or perhaps a scalp block (also with local anesthesia) to help with your comfort during the procedure. You should consult with your surgeon about the plans for keeping you comfortable, however. You will not need either general or likely even sedation.

This depends on the physician doing the procedure, your general health etc. Often a local anesthetic can be used with mild sedation if necessary
Generally not.
Thanks for the question. Hair transplantation does not require general anesthesia.

Usually you are given some oral medication, a Valium-type drug. This allows you to relax and keep your blood pressure down (WHICH IS GOOD FOR HAIR GRAFTING!). Also, the oral medicine can potentially prevent side effects from the local anesthetics (i.e., Lidocaine) used in the procedure. Make sure you go to a board certified SURGEON for your hair restoration. Check all credentials. You will be surprised that many doctors are only there for show and do not participate in the procedure.

THANK YOU
Yes, all surgical procedures are done with anesthesia. You may need to know if the procedure your thinking about is generally done under local anesthesia, sedation with local anesthetic infiltration, or general anesthesia. Consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon should clarify to you what type of anesthesia would be suitable for your particular procedure. Good luck.
