Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT) Questions Strep Throat

Why do I keep getting strep throat?

I have strep for the third time this year! What could be the reason for this recurring infection?

You may be a strep carrier, in which case antibiotics will not cure it. The good news is that the strep just co-exists with you and doesn't necessarily do harm. You might get a throat culture when you are asymptomatic to confirm that possibility.
Hello,

It is difficult to know for sure without performing additional testing. However, you or a family member may be a strep carrier. Also, ensure that after treatment, one should change out the toothbrush and only drink from a water bottle and avoid water fountains.

Recurrent tonsillitis, partially treated strep, pharyngitis, acid reflux can all be causal.
Tonsils have crevices and bacteria in these areas which may not get adequate exposure to an oral antibiotic. If you have had frequent bouts and cultures have been taken, then you and your physician need to discuss whether or not you would benefit from a tonsillectomy. Sometimes recurrence may mean you were not treated for an adequate period or the bacteria was resistant to the antibiotic.
You may be a carrier in which case you will need the proper antibiotic for an extended period of time and if it doesn’t work you will need a tonsillectomy
Probable chronic, subclinical tonsillar crypt infection with strep which can activated to clinical state by further compromise, i.e. virus, inflammation
