My foster child is mute?

I have a 13 year old foster child who is mute. How can I help her?

Selective mutism is within the scope of practice for speech pathology. However, given the brief hx of being within the foster care system, might I suggest a full development evaluation
I would recommend speaking with her pediatrician first. Has she always been mute? Is this a recent occurrence? Make sure there is not a medical reason for her muteness.
Speak with the child's pediatrician first. If he/she cannot help the child, they will refer the child to an appropriate practitioner.
Get her an evaluation with developmental pediatrician or psychologist, or it may just take some time for her to warm up.
