Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (Pediatric) Questions Strep Throat

Is there a natural treatment for strep throat in kids?

My son is allergic to penicillin and has strep throat. The doctor gave him amoxicillin, but we don't want to use antibiotics altogether. Apart from antibiotics, are there any natural ways to treat strep throat in kids?

There are many natural ways to treat strep throat. Strep throat is caused due to overloaded lymph nodes. Please get him to have lymphatic drainage.
There are throat sprays. You can ask the doctor.
Manuka Honey from New Zealand is close. If it can kill MRSA and Amoxicillin/Penicillin cannot then Manuka Honey is my first choice if I cannot get my hands on Amoxicillin/Pen VK, which is first Line therapy and free at Publix Supermarkets.

Prevention is key. A health immune system, hand washing and teaching on not sharing food utensils is very important. Silver and oil of oregano is very good for healthy immune systems for adults and children.

Hi, If your son has a strept sore throat, penicillins is a category of medication that can be used to treat this infection. If the child is allergic to this medication there are other categories of antibiotic which can be used. This is a safe and effective way to treat this infection. Prevention of a strept infection can be done by encouraging a good immune system by diet, hydration, rest and exercise.
I don't know of a natural treatment for strep throat. Kindly treat your kid's strep throat to avoid complications.
No. If your son is allergic to penicillin he should not be treated with amoxicillin. He could be treated with an erythromycin, clindamycin or if not a type I hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin, a cephalosporin. Failure to treat him risks suppurative complications, glomulerulonephritis and rheumatic fever.
I would recommend using antibiotics especially in children because although strep throat itself is not dangerous, it can lead to serious complications such as scarlet fever, kidney inflammation, rheumatic fever, and post-strep reactive arthritis. Antibiotic use will reduce the risk of those complications. I would suggest using a probiotic 2-3 hours after each dose of antibiotic. This would at least decrease diarrhea related to antibiotic use and replenish the gut microbiome. Also, eating prebiotic foods to help feed the probiotics would be good.
There isn't a proven natural treatment for strep throat. It's important to treat it with antibiotics. You are not just treating the sore throat; you are preventing the more severe consequences of strep infection, like damage to the heart valves (rheumatic fever) or kidneys (strep glomerulonephritis). If your child is allergic to penicillin, there are other effective antibiotics for strep that your doctor can prescribe.

Best for child to be treated with antibiotics. If allergy to penicillin, can use clindamycin or azithromycin
NO. Strep throat is an infection of the pharynx and/or tonsils with Beta hemolytic strep bacteria and must be treated with antibiotics. Otherwise, there is a risk of serious complications including rheumatic fever, which can lead to rheumatic heart disease (including heart valve damage) and glomerulonephritis (kidney injury). These consequences are rare, but can be deadly serious.

No. There are other antibiotics not in the penicillin family. Strep throat can cause rheumatic heart disease if left untreated
Strep throat has a very small risk of causing rheumatic fever which can be very dangerous. Antibiotics are necessary to prevent it. In addition, antibiotics make the child get better faster, and make them not contagious after 48 hours. Finally, it prevents other complications such as abscess formation or more serious complications.=20
