Cardiologist Questions Heart Rate

What is the normal resting heart rate for a 78 year old elderly person?

My mother is 78 years old and her resting heart rate is about 100. Is this normal? What should be the ideal number?

60 to 100 beats per minute
60-80 BPM would be ideal. If her heart rate is 100 BPM or greater 24 hrs 7 days per week this will eventually cause the heart to become weak. This is called tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. A 48 hr Holter would help to assess this. if needed and not contraindicated a beta blocker may be needed. Of course, the reason she stays at higher rates should be investigated as well.
Between 60 to 80 beats are usual. If it is 100 or above, we have to find out why.
That is borderline fast. It is worth checking that the rhythm is normal with an ECG – if it is atrial fibrillation she may need to be on anti-coagulation to prevent a stroke.
This seems a bit high. Normal for her age is probably 55-80
If this is her resting heart rate, it is a bit too fast. She needs to check that she is in the normal  heart rhythm (sinus), not atrial fibrillation, and her GP can do this with an ECG. The usual resting heart rate is between 60 and 90.
