Surgeon Questions Diabetes

What are the precautions for a diabetic patient going in for a knee surgery?

My husband is due for a knee surgery because of a tear in his ligament. While the surgery is not a concern, we are worried because he is a diabetic. Are there any precautions to keep in mind?

Control diabetes and lose weight.
Talk to the Doctor who will do the surgery and ask every question you can think of and ask why he is willing to do surgery on your husband with him being a diabetic. The more you know the better you can take care of him now and after the surgery. You just pray and ask God for his help and everything will be OK
Diabetes is well monitor before any surgery. Advice will be given during the pre-operative assessment. On some occasions, the admission to the hospital is organized the night before in most cases of type 1 diabetes. All instructions will be given according to the press assessment.
If the diabetes is under control, usually standard precautions are needed.
Managing his blood sugars in a good range will go a long way in reading infection and proper healing.
Usually the precautions are to keep the same treatment until the day of the surgery and stop the medications on the day of the procedure. Your surgeon and the anesthesiologist will take care of the sugar levels before and after the surgery. For this type of surgery, the diabetes normally does not alter. In some other larger surgical procedures, the care should be more intense. It is always important to check with your doctor to see if there is any other instruction.
Check BS 2 hrs and 1 hr prior to surgery. Also, he must get antibiotic IV 40 to 60 min. prior to surgery. Check BS prior to feeding him.
