How can I protect my eyes while working in front of the computer for close to 8 hours a day?

I have a computer-related desk job that really strains my eyes. How can I protect my eyes while working long hours?

Computer use is not harmful. It is tiring and especially drying. The dryness relates to the fact that the normal blink rate is about 16 per minute and drops to 5-6 per minute when using the computer which enhances drying. I recommend to those who have to do sustained computer work, to keep a drop of ordinary lubricating eye drops at the computer site to be used when you get fatigued, headachy, irritable eyes, red eyes or visual blur. I like to emphasize that the employees at Apple who are on the computer steadily 10-14 hours per day, have no more actual eye problems than do the rest of us that use computers intermittently.
Most discomfort arising from use of computers is due to dry eyes. Use artificial tears occasionally throughout the day to increase moisture and comfort of your eyes.

Eyes get very dry and irritated while doing concentrated near work like computers. We blink a lot less during this work. When we blink, we lubricate eyes with tears. You should use non-preserved tear drops before you start and every couple of hours. Also, every 20 minutes, you could close your eyes for a few minutes to rest them. Also, do not have fans blowing at you during these tasks.
Every 20 minutes look away from the computer at some distant object. Hold that gaze for 2 minutes then close your eyes for 2 minutes. This allows the muscles to relax and the eye to become well lubricated.

Proper lightening conditions,Change focus distance every 20 minutes at least, frequent blinking,in underlying dry eye conditions use moistening drops. Anti-glare devices.
You can decrease strain by having a pair of glasses made based on your working distance from the computer. An anti reflective coating will help with glare from the computer. It also decrease strain if you can take a break about every 20 minutes. Artificial tears can help if your eyes are dry. A final tip is to have the screen slightly below eye level. All of these should help protect your eyes.
Take breaks every half hour by closing your eyes and blinking regularly while on the computer
Use 20/20/20 rules. Every 20 minutes look at 20F for 20 seconds. Use some tears if you feel dry,...
There is no proven evidence that working on a computer damages your eyes in any way. Although fatigue and headaches are not uncommon if you work at a computer for many hours a day.
Taking a break every hour or ten for five minutes with a stretch and looking far every for a minute or so can help reduce the fatigue. Also be sure that your chair is comfortable and your back is straight and you use an ergonomic keyboard.
Glare screen can reduce the blue light and reduce fatigue.
