Radiologist Questions Melanoma

Can radiation therapy increase one's chances of getting melanoma?

My mother underwent radiation therapy for breast cancer. Her treatment is over, however her skin around the areola becomes extremely dry and itchy. Lately, she mentioned about the appearance of a mole in that area as well. She is very worried as she is suspecting it to be melanoma. Could this be a possibility?

She should be seen by the radiation oncologist first who supervised the radiation treatment. That physician is the expert on radiation effects. If there is any question about whether there is a skin cancer your mother will probably be referred to a dermatologist who can evaluate her and do a biopsy if necessary.
You should have this checked out by a dermatologist.
