Radiologist Questions Mammogram

Can a radiologist detect the presence of cancer?

My mother-in-law had been asked to go in for mammogram since she was experiencing pain in her right breast. The radiologist said the results were good and everything is fine and there are no cancer symptoms. Do we go with the radiologist's opinion or check with a specialist?

Yes. Trust the mammogram findings unless she has a growing mass.
Please have her checked by a specialist or an OB/GYN - 10% of breast Cancers are not detected by mammograms.
The cancer can be detected by the X-ray, but if the lump is too early, it is best to be checked by the specialist.

While the mammogram is of much value and reassuring, it is important to also have a physical breast examination.
Go with the radiologist, but a self exam is always good.
Hi,

Radiologists are trained to detect subtle findings of cancer. Most symptoms of breast cancer are usually not painful, so it could be that she is experiencing some other condition. Best practice is to have your yearly mammogram to detect the subtle changes of breast cancer. And in respond to your question, yes you should believe the radiologist.

In most instances, they are correct, but there are many factors to look at. To feel better, it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from a breast surgeon.
