Sports Medicine Specialist Questions Back Surgery

How soon can I resume swimming after a back surgery?

I had back surgery 3 months ago. I started to walk over a month ago, and it definitely has helped build my recovery, but I want to start swimming again to rebuild my stamina. How soon can I resume swimming after this surgery?

I would probably ask your surgeon what his/her preference is, but I think I would wait 6 months after a spinal fusion. If it was just a decompression or a kyphoplasty, you certainly could swim by now.
This should be a question for the performing surfer on. It ultimately depends on the surgery and your current rehab. You are likely out of the window, but spinal surgery is serious. Call in and have the nurse ask the doctor and get back to you if you don’t/can’t get evaluated.
Ask your surgeon
I think any time BUT clear it with your surgeon
It depends on the type of back surgery you had, but generally swimming should be beneficial to your recovery as long as you take the precautions recommended by your surgeon
You may need to confirm with your spine surgeon but you should be able to return to swimming gradually if no objection by your spine surgeon.
I would definitely check with your surgeon, but I would expect that you could do it soon. Good luck!
