Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Creatinine

Is there a way to reduce creatinine levels naturally?

My mother in law is 72 and has been suffering from fluctuating diabetes levels. Her creatinine level was managed at 1.4 for 2 years however from the last one year it has been steadily increasing. It is now 5.8. Is there any way to reduce creatinine levels naturally?

Doubtful, good HTN, and glucemia control might help, and with time creatinine level may improve.
She needs to make sure she sees a nephrologist asap, she can see me at 713-520-6875.
She needs to refrain from all NSAIDS (motrin, advil) and hold Ace Inhibitors or ARBS- such as losartan and lisinopril bp meds. Losing weight, 10-20 pounds, and controlling BP is the only way to decrease creatinine levels.
Unfortunately natural treatment at this point is unlikely to improve the progressive decline in kidney function. However good nutritional support will help her overall health. She needs close follow up with her kidney specialist.
As there is a sudden rise in serum creatinine recently, make sure appropriate work up has been done already, including a urine analysis, kidney ultrasound, urine protein, medication review including over-the-counter medications etc.

Few things she can do to protect the kidney is to cut down salt, processed meat etc. and avoid non steroidal anti inflammatory medications. Try to have good BP control and also blood sugar control. Also, cutting down total protein intake may help (around 0.6-0.8 gm/kg/day). Hope this will help you.
