Psychiatrist Questions Zoloft

What are common side effects of Zoloft?

My doctor prescribed me with Zoloft and I don't think it's working. Since I started taking it, I'm feeling even more drowsiness and depressed. Are these common side effects of Zoloft? Should I see if I can be prescribed something different? I've been taking it for a month and I'm 45 years.

Yes, try it at night. If that doesn't work, switch medicines or lower the dose.

Hello, Drowsiness is a common side effect of Zoloft. Its antidepressant effects might start even after 3 months of starting the medication. If you feel that the medication is not suitable for you, you may consult your  physician for a change. He will explain more about side effects and expectations of treatment. You need to know that there are treatment resistant patients (about 25%) and that those patients may need more intensive types of treatment. You need to consult your physician for more information.
Yes, you can have those side effects even though it's supposed to do the opposite.
Hello, I’m sorry to hear that. Those could be side effects of the medication and shouldn’t be happening. It takes 1-2 weeks to see a slight improvement when starting antidepressants and 6-8 weeks for the medication to reach its full potential. I would definitely speak to your doctor about switching to a different SSRI or another class of antidepressants. Each patient has a different response to antidepressants and you just need to find the one that works for you. Keep in mind that when it comes to antidepressants, you need to be patient. Whenever you make a change or adjust the dosage, it takes your body at least 4-6 weeks to adjust and achieve the medication’s full potential. I hope I was able to help and answered your questions!
