What causes acid reflux everyday?

I am a 40 year old male. I have acid reflux everyday. What could be the cause?

Acid reflux is usually a chronic problem, either because the lower esophageal sphincter is weak and/or there might be a hiatal hernia. These abnormalities make stomach acid reflux up into the esophagus.

Acid reflux problems can be caused by different factors. I would need to know a lot more about you to try to understand and explain the reasons for you having reflux. An explanation for many people with reflux is that the acid that is made in their stomach(an normal event) migrates to the esophagus which is more sensitive to eh presence of acid. This is because they have a weak barrier between the esophagus and stomach. This valve is called the lower esophageal sphincter. Also factors such as diet, smoking, drinking and obesity can make this problem worse, that is why I said I need more information to tailor this answer to your specific case.
Hello,

Yes, this is very common among 40, 50 and 60 year olds. As we age, our enzyme production declines so we're not making all those great enzymes to digest food anymore which causes symptoms such has heart burn, reflux, gas, and bloating. We suggest taking a digestive enzyme with meals.

Thank you,

Acid reflux can be managed by diet and exercise. Allow 3 hrs between your last meal and reclining or going to bed at night. Eat small meals throughout the day, no large meals. Avoid greasy, fatty, fried foods. Avoid carbonated and caffeinated drinks- includes coffee and tea. Avoid milk and milk products like creamy sauces and tomato based sauces. Also may try Pepcid over the counter if no allergies. Take it 1/2 hr prior to breakfast daily. If symptoms persist, seek further evaluation by a gastroenterologist.
This is a more complex issue than one would expect. The most common cause is a hiatal hernia. If you imagine the diaphragm, which moves up and down as we breathe, as a plastic garbage can cover, your stomach belongs below right under a small hole in that cover. Very often, that little hole weakens and the stomach gets pushed up above the cover. When that happens, the acid and other stomach secretions now irritate the esophagus causing pain, chest burning, cough, throat irritation, voice change, and even esophageal cancer. Go see a gastroenterologist to get that heartburn checked out.
