Hi. Blood clots in veins (deep vein thromboses DVT) are due to many different factors that can be cumulative. Some risk factors are obesity, birth control pills, smoking, pregnancy, family history, certain genetic abnormalities, after surgery, immobility.
Blood clots in veins are usually caused by inactivity such as sitting for a long time without moving, such as on a long airline flight. The concern is that blood clots in the deep veins of the leg could lead to them traveling to the lungs, but it doesn't sound like your physician is concerned about the type that you have.
