What causes implantation bleeding?

My wife is pregnant and had spotting which the doctor said is implantation bleeding. Why does this happen?

The egg gets fertilized while traveling through the Fallopian tube. The fertilized egg then continues to travel until it enters the uterine cavity. In order for the pregnancy to happen this fertilized egg needs to sort of burrow a tiny hole into the lining of the uterus and attach itself there. Burrowing this tiny hole can cause some bleeding.
This might be a signal of threatened abortion.
