There is no cure. But there are many ways to treat it and help reduce symptoms. This is too large a topic to review and each person's IBS needs to be assessed individually. Find a good GI doc who will go beyond simply doing procedures (which will not help IBS) and will take the time to find the right medical regimen to help. This might include over the counter remedies and prescription drugs.
There is no “cure” because it is not a disease. It is a symptom complex and treatment is aimed at relief of symptoms.
Experimentation. The meds that work for you may make your cousin worse. Your doctor can try some antispasmodics. Keep a diary of foods, too to see if any seem to help or hurt.
The symptoms associated with irritable bowel are very common when you're not producing enough enzymes to digest your food properly or don't have enough good bacteria in the gut. This happens as we age, when we are not eating the best diet in the world or if we are really stressed out. It's very easy to fix, however, taking a good healthy probiotic daily and enzyme with every meal can help eliminate these symptoms very quickly.
