General anesthesia
It can be done under general anesthesia as well as epidural for post operative pain management
General anesthesia is the most common type of anesthesia for colon surgeries. This type of anesthesia is where the patient is made unconscious and is totally asleep for the entire procedure. This can sometimes be combined with nerve blocks and/or epidurals to help control pain postoperatively but most often the patient is totally asleep for the actual surgery.
General anesthesia with breathing tube is the standard. You may be offered an epidural catheter for post op pain relief
Usually colon surgery is done with the patient under general anesthesia, especially if it is done as minimally invasive surgery. The patient usually has an endotracheal tube (breathing tube) placed prior to beginning of surgery. This is to protect the patient's airway. If you have concerns, you can consult with your surgeon and someone from the anesthesia department where the procedure will take place. If it is a colonoscopy (where scope is passed from below to evaluate the colon), then this is usually done using sedation and not ga.
Could be geta or regional...spinal.
