Why can't toddlers have cough medicine?

My toddler son is coughing but I don't think I can give him medicine. Why can't toddlers have cough medicine? What can I do?

There are two parts to this answer. First of all, it does not work. Every study done (to my knowledge) that looks at a comparison of cough medication to a placebo or fake medication shows clearly that there is no difference between placebo and the medication. In my practice of 35 years, I can assure you that these medications do not work. The second answer is that these medication have side effects, including lethargy and in rare cases overdose can lead to death. Therefore, a medication that does not work and has potential side effects should not be given to kids. If your child has a cough, there are a few things you can to to help. First make sure your child is well hydrated. Second, being up right and sleeping with the head elevated can reduce cough. Third, if your child is over 1 year of age, it is okay to give a teaspoon of Buckwheat honey as there is evidence that this can help. There is also some evidence that Vicks Vapo Rub, either on the neck or under the nose, can help. If the cough is accompanied by fever or difficult breathing, contact your provider.

"Cough medicine" suppresses the physiologic urge to cough, it does not CURE the reason for the cough. Most cough medicines are narcotics or other powerful drugs that should not be used casually, especially in children. Several years ago, the FDA removed all cough medicines for children under the age of 2 years. It is very important in children to identify the reason for their symptoms, rather than just relieving the symptom (a common approach in adults). Children don't cough because they smoked or drank too much last night. A cough is always abnormal -- identify the cause and treating it appropriately is the best approach. See you pediatrician when your child is coughing and s/he should work to identify the underlying problem, and then provide treatment recommendations for you.

Cough suppressants are not appropriate for kids under the age of 6 as there were many adverse side effects due to the ingredients in the products. I recommend doing warm herbal teas and honey. Thyme the herb is a great cough suppressant you can make into a tea. There are also natural cough syrups like V Clear. Focus on boosting the immune system with fruits and vegetables as well as echinacea and elderberry which there is good evidence for.
Because it can induce stopping breathing.
Hello

Yes cough medicine has anti histamines which are too strong for toddlers. I would have the cough checked by your doctor. Feel better!
