Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Sumeer Sathi, who serves patients in East Patchogue, New York.

Dr. Sathi focuses on both complicated brain and spine surgery and newer less invasive procedures, including kyphoplasty and dorsal column stimulation. His practice includes the treatment of herniated disks and fractures in the spine, as well as the treatment of brain tumors such as metastasis, gliomas, meningiomas, acoustic schwannomas, and trigeminal neuralgia using gamma knife radiosurgery.. He also has significant experience in frameless stereotaxis and image guided brain tumor surgery. 

Dr. Sathi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, New York. 

Dr. Sathi is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the science of neurological surgery, thereby serving the cause of public health. 

Dr. Sathi is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurosurgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the New York State Neurosurgical Society, and the Suffolk County Medical Society.

Since 2000, Dr. Sathi has been the Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and the Medical Director of the Neurosciences Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. He is also the Co-director of the Brain and Spine Tumor Center at John T. Mather Hospital.

Dr. Sathi served as Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Charles Hospital from 2000 to 2016. Additionally, he is a past President of the Medical Staff at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Sathi obtained his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in neuroscience with high distinction in research from the University of Rochester in 1985. He then went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1989. He served as general surgery intern and neurosurgery resident at the Harvard Medical School program, The Children’s Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also supervised the cerebrovascular research laboratory involved in neuroprotection. After finishing his residency, Dr. Sathi entered a skull base and cerebrovascular surgery fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. John Tew Jr. 

Dr. Sathi has published numerous original papers in journals such as Neurosurgery, Surgical Neurology, and the Journal of Neurosurgery. He has also authored several textbook chapters on the management of brain disorders. Furthermore, he has made numerous national presentations on neurological issues at various conferences.

Dr. Sathi continues to remain active in the education of medical students, nurses, and physician assistant students. He has received numerous honors for his research activities over the years.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders affecting any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons specialize in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system including congenital anomalies, vascular disorders, tumors, stroke, infections of the brain or spine, trauma, or degenerative diseases of the spine. They use neuroradiology imaging like MRI, CT, PET, and MEG to diagnose / treat neurological problems.
