Dr. Petersen, a fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, is a founding partner of Vascular Associates of Long Island, PC alongside Kara Kvilekval, MD. 

Providing diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease in the most sophisticated and compassionate manner, he specializes in carotid disease, aortic aneurysms, venous disease, dialysis access, surgery for stroke prevention and for the treatment of hypertension, lower extremity vascular reconstruction, limb salvage, surgery for diabetic ulcers, treatment of varicose veins, and endovascular aneurysm repair.

With the Mather Wound Treatment Center since 2003, Dr. Petersen was named Medical Director in 2008. He also holds medical privileges at St. Charles Hospital, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, and Stony Brook University Hospital.

A certified wound care specialist, he serves as an active member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons (Fellow), the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Wound Healing Society, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the Association for Academic Surgery, and the Suffolk County Medical Society. 

A graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Petersen went on to perform his residency in general surgery at Stony Brook University. He followed up with a fellowship in vascular surgery at Harvard University (Massachusetts General Hospital).

Passionate about enhancing patients’ quality of life, the doctor is board-certified in vascular surgery and general surgery by American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.
