Dr. Stephen A Bass M.D.'s Expert Contributions
  • Is anesthesia safe for a person who suffers with seizures?

General anesthesia and the medications used all typically lower the risk for seizures, and some of them are used to treat people when they are seizing. Lidocaine is known to have potential to lower the seizure threshold (make someone with seizures more prone to a seizure), but we typically avoid this medication when inducing anesthesia. Lidocaine dosage is typically to low when it is used for skin numbing, it should just be minimized if given IV. Bottom line, seizure medication should be continued and discussed pre-surgery with the anesthesiologist, and the risk for seizures is low. READ MORE

  • Is my fever a side effect of anesthesia?

Fevers that occur within 24 hours after surgery are almost always due to collapsing of small airways inside the lungs. This is called atelectasis. It can be due to a combination of factors such as positioning during surgery, preexisting lung disease, or even pain after surgery preventing a deep breathing. This issue usually is temporary. There can be other causes, but patients at risk for other causes are watched closely. READ MORE

  • Is vomiting after anesthesia normal?

Unfortunately, nausea is a common side effect and vomiting can occur. General anesthesia, laparoscopic surgeries, breast surgery, and surgery that requires a lot of opiate pain control as well as female sex are risk factors. Up to 15%-20% of patients will have nausea that may not be successfully treated with most anti-nausea medications and may require some alternative methods of anesthesia if the N/V is severe. • For a skin grafting procedure, are you given general or local anesthesia?

This is surgeon dependent. It also depends on the size of the graft but anything larger than a graft for a finger or hand typically requires general anesthesia. READ MORE

  • Can anesthesia cause depression?

Depression is a complicated issue that can be caused from several issues that can be hard to pinpoint. It is unlikely related to the anesthesia, but potentially could cause a depressed mood that would resolve within a short time frame (a few days). READ MORE

  • What are the possible side effects to anesthesia?

Typical side effects are nausea, vomiting, short-term memory effects (day of surgery), sore throat, risk for dental injury or small cut on a lip, etc. It is best to discuss specific questions as they will relate to the anesthetic technique used and the surgical procedure being done. READ MORE

  • Is it safe for an 86 year old to go under anesthesia?

Generally, it’s best not to expose the elderly to general anesthesia unless necessary. Risk of dementia (both short- and long-term) increases after age 70 with patients receiving general anesthesia. READ MORE

  • Will anesthesia have a lasting effect on my blood pressure?

Unless the blood pressure is low enough to cause symptoms (light headed, weakness) then I am not typically worried. My answer may be different if you are taking blood pressure medication and then it would matter what medications they are, when they were last adjusted or prescribed, and if you had any heart or other medical conditions. READ MORE

  • Is anesthesia risky for a COPD patient?

Any patients that have COPD will be at risk, but risk will always be related to the surgery being done and they type of anesthesia needed. READ MORE

  • Is general anesthesia required for a bronchoscopy?

Bronchoscopy does not require general anesthesia, but some doctors prefer, or patients may prefer to be placed under general for the procedure. READ MORE

  • What kind of anesthesia will I be given for my cataract surgery?

Rarely is anesthesia anything other than some light sedation with local for cataract surgery. READ MORE

  • What if my anesthesia stops working in the middle of the surgery?

The internet will always be a haven for horror stories concerning everything. The large majority of people get anesthesia with no issues. I would discuss this for reassurance the day of surgery. READ MORE

  • Is it risky for children to go under anesthesia?

Anesthesia has never been safer than it is at this point in history! Everything has risk but it is generally low. I wouldn’t let the risk of anesthesia keep me from going forward with surgery. READ MORE

  • Why was my son given anesthesia for a CT scan?

Typically, younger children undergo these scanning procedures with anesthesia because they are not able to reliably hold still enough long enough to complete an adequate scan. READ MORE
