About

Dr. Jane Jordan practices Orthodontics in Phoenix, AZ. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment includes metal wires that are inserted into orthodontic brackets, which can be made from stainless steel or a more aesthetic ceramic material. The wires interact with the brackets to move teeth into desired positions. Being advanced in the field, Dr. Jordan may also use Invisalign or other aligner trays that have been designed to align a patients? smile. As an orthodontist, Dr. Jordan must recognize various characteristics of a malocclusion or dentofacial deformity, define the nature of the problem, including the etiology if possible, and design a treatment strategy based on the specific needs and desires of the patient.

  • What are invisible braces? Are they very expensive?

The term "invisible braces" alludes to braces that are less noticeable because they are made of a clear material. Usually, they are made of a ceramic or glass, but they can also be made of plastic. They typically are not priced any differently than a metal bracket or are only minimally more costly. READ MORE

  • Using teeth whitening strips is causing a burning sensation. Is this normal?

Yes, sometimes whitening teeth can lead to this sensation. The question I have is, is the sensation coming from your gums or from the teeth themselves? If it is the gum tissue, you should take care to avoid any contact of the strips to the gums to avoid this direct contact of the whitening agent, which can indeed irritate and burn the tissue. If you are not sure whether it is your teeth or your gums, or if you think it is your teeth, I do not recommend that you continue to use them without first consulting your dentist to ensure that you are safe in applying the strips. • What can I do to help my child understand why they need braces?

Sometimes pictures are a tremendous help. You can find many examples on the internet. Do you think it might be helpful to show her before and after pictures of people who have had orthodontic treatment? There may be a reasonable solution for her with a treatment she might agree with, for example treatment with Invisalign. If you think that you can at least get her to see an Orthodontist for an evaluation, that Orthodontist can evaluate and assist you both in making sense of it all. Let the Orthodontist know about her concerns and encourage her not to be afraid to speak with them. I'm sure you know your daughter best. If you have the ability to select from a pool of doctors, try picking one that you think your daughter would like the most. Maybe call ahead and speak with the office or visit the office to see if you think your daughter would be comfortable there or not. If none of these options work, it may be a matter of waiting for her to mature a bit. We see many adults who willing seek out treatment that they may have avoided as a child. Best wishes for your success with your daughter. :) READ MORE

  • How is an overbite usually treated?

Invisalign has made great advances in their product and can often be a viable option to treat an overbite. It may not be the best for your situation though. An orthodontist is trained to help you determine the best course of action in attaining the smile you want and in achieving a healthy result. I recommend that you speak again with your orthodontist and discuss your concerns. You can then question them if Invisalign might work for you or if there might be a different solution. READ MORE

  • Braces

Not necessarily but it could lead to a worsening of the alignment of the teeth on either side. It would be best to have an orthodontist take a look at it and then advise you. Seeing an orthodontist is the best way to know for sure and most orthodontists will evaluate a patient free of charge. • My daughter is 13 years old and has a bite problem. What will be the course of treatment?

Your daughter should be examined by an orthodontist as soon as possible. This type of bite needs intervention to be corrected. Depending on the underlying reason for this bite, there might be a treatment with braces that can correct it, but the sooner it is evaluated the less chance that it can lead to other problems. Sometimes, a correction of this type of bite might require a surgical correction as well. An orthodontist should be able to advise you once they have examined your daughter. READ MORE

  • My son is 8 years and his permanent teeth are crooked. Is it too early to go to an orthodontist?

Yes definitely, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that an orthodontist examine a child's teeth by the time they are 7 years old, even while baby teeth are still in the mouth. An orthodontist can identify a developing problem and often times they might suggest working with the dentist to have them remove a baby tooth or teeth early in order to prevent a larger problem. Often, the orthodontist will just want to monitor the child’s growth and development, and then if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time for the child. In other cases, the orthodontist might find a problem that can benefit from early treatment. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for teeth to set with retainers?

It can take the teeth up to one year or more to stabilize after treatment. That is typically the amount of time necessary for the bone and surrounding structures to heal. Although everyone is different, we typically try to wean people off of wearing their retainers slowly. The main thing to keep in mind is that you should wear your retainers enough to keep your teeth in place and for your retainers to fit properly. Never throw them away as they are a tool to ensure that your teeth remain in position for a life time. For some people, after the first year out of braces, the positions of their teeth will never be stable enough for them to completely stop wearing their retainers, making it necessary to wear them several nights a week. For others it is just a matter of checking regularly that their retainers fit properly. READ MORE

  • My daughter is 4 years old and is used to sucking her thumb. Will it cause her teeth to grow outwards?

Research shows that thumb sucking after the age of four or five can change the shape of a persons jaws in a way that can lead to improper positioning of the teeth. If you are worried their sucking may be hurting her teeth don't hesitate to ask your dentist or visit an orthodontist who can evaluate your daughter. Most orthodontists are happy to offer a complimentary evaluation free of charge. Thumb sucking isn't always a concern but it is more likely to cause a problem if a child sucks vigorously, as opposed to passively resting the thumb in his or her mouth. Aggressive thumb sucking can even cause problems in baby teeth. If you're concerned about the effect of thumb sucking on your daughter's teeth, check with an orthodontist or the dentist. For some childern, a chat with a doctor about why it's important to stop thumb sucking is more effective than a talk with mom or dad and if all else fails the orthodontist might recommend a special mouth guard or other dental appliance that interferes with sucking.
