Get to know Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Ronaldo B. Supena, who serves patients in Detroit, Michigan.

After having spent 15 years as a member of the faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School and 22 years as a member of the faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Supena decided to continue to practice medicine and to serve the community by joining Detroit Community Health Connection Inc. Since 2008, his practice has been concentrated on patients with HIV infection, sexually transmitted infections and other infectious diseases.  

Being a knowledgeable infectious disease specialist and the Clinic Director for HIV infections, he takes care of little over 200 patients. With the variety of potent antiretroviral agents, 90% of his patients are doing very well despite the COVID 19 pandemic. 80% of these patients have undetectable viral load. 

Since opening their doors to patients back in 1988, Detroit Community Health Connection, Inc has been a leading healthcare facility for patients in the Detroit area. Regarding his educational background, Dr. Supena earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Manila, Philippines in 1965. After relocating to the United States, he went on to complete his internship, residency in internal medicine, and fellowship in infectious disease at the Westland Medical Center.

A member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Practicing medicine in Michigan, Dr. Supena is affiliated with many different medical venues, including Detroit Medical Center Harper Hospital, Detroit VA Healthcare System, and Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with prevention, the diagnosis, and treatment of infections. Infectious disease specialists provide long-term care to people with diseases that are lifelong or last for more than one year. They employ a variety of antimicrobial agents to help treat infections.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Supena enjoys reading. His favorite place to vacation is in Europe. His favorite professional publications are the New England Journal of Medicine, Clinical Infectious Disease, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Lancet HIV.
