Whether you have MD, or a child with MD, maintaining independence is crucial. What do you do to make sure that you or your child still have a sense of independence?

I keep myself very busy as not to dwell on what I can't do. I have 6 grandchildren I see regularly have 2 large dogs and love my garden. I do scrapbooking in my spare time and go to classes on Tuesday night at helensvale 30 minutes away from home. I volunteer 2 days a week at our local endeavour shop. I do hydrotherapy once a week. My husband and I have a converted caravan that we try to go camping in once a month. We go to garden club once a month also. I write poetry and have self published my own book. I also perform my own poetry once a month and attend a writer's group. One day I would like to publish a children's book and be paid as a public speaker talking about staying positive and dealing with a disability.

MD can put a lot of limitations on your body. What are your own limitations, and how do you attempt to overcome them?

My condition makes me tired but I try hard not to let it rule my life and do as much as I can to help my kids and grandkids.

What advice do you have for other MD patients who want to maintain their independence?

Find a hobby or interest you enjoy and keep busy.
