Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are diseases of the airways and other structures of the lung. Some of the most common are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, occupational lung diseases, and pulmonary hypertension. Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are not curable, however, various forms of treatment that help dilate major air passages and improve shortness of breath can help control symptoms and increase the quality of life for people with the disease.
The symptoms of a chronic respiratory disease may be mild at first, starting with intermittent coughing and shortness of breath. As the disease progresses, symptoms will become more constant to where it can become increasingly difficult to breathe. Tens of millions of people suffer from lung disease in the U.S. which may be caused by infection, smoking, or by breathing in secondhand smoke, radon, asbestos, or other forms of air pollution.
