Hello,
Yes, when you have a crack in the skin it is most likely a fungal infection. It can come from as you mentioned public areas but these also include pedicure places. I recommend that you treat it with a topical anti-fungal cream like Lamsil once daily for 10 days. It can spread in moist environments to other people in the house, so, to prevent this, use a shoe and floor sanitizing spray.

I have a painful, swollen ankle following an injury. What to do?
It seemed like you either now have a chronic weak ankle or your sprain is more than one ligament. You should get X-rays of your ankle and go into a walking boot.

Thank you for your question. It really depends on where the swelling is and what gear you are running in. It seems that it has to do with the veins in your ankle and I would recommend a study from your cardiologist before wearing compression socks during your run. If this is truly exercise induced, then wearing compression will help a lot and it shouldn’t return.

It seems as though it could be a few things, if you don’t feel anything in your skin, I would confirm that with a diagnostic X-ray or ultrasound. It could be a fibrous tissue mass under the toe. I would start with epsom salt soaks to help draw out anything stuck under the skin.
