In the 80s the Baxter comp asked me to conduct a study of his new hypnotic Propofol. The other anesthesiologists were afraid of this novel drug. But I am brave and bold and said yes. They gave me 200 forms of consent to inform patients they were part of a study. And 200 forms to follow during and after anesthesia. They were all ages..both sexes. All types of surgeries, gen surgery, ortho, GYN, ent, etc. I administered in bolus and drips. I tried sedation doses and general anesthesia doses. What did I see?
Propofol acted as an aphrodisiac! Increased libido! I observed that men wake up touching in improper manners the nurse anesthetist many times. You are mine! You are my woman, said the old man grabbing my female anesthetist. Also, I saw women too who were touching the face of the male anesthetist. I love you! I was so surprised. This was not in the side effects. I warn the Baxters representatives. They told me they will add my observation to the secondary effects. And I checked later. And they added a libido increase. For my work, the Baxter gave me two gifts, an infusion pump, and 250 dollars! And to end...I saw that patients could gain a full conscience and remember after five minutes of the drug being discontinued. I combined in all cases..a narcotic, a benzodiazepine; no versed in that moment, gases, forane and N2O.02. I never saw again reactions like this in years to come when I used Propofol.
