Why have a Body Lift Surgery after weight loss?

For many people suffering from potentially life-threatening obesity, bariatric surgery is the answer. This surgery is known for a long track record of success and dramatic weight loss. Of all the available treatments for weight loss, bariatric surgery is the most effective choice for sustainable weight loss over time, and for amelioration of obesity-related complications. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, bariatric operations are rising each year, with an estimated 205,000 procedures performed in 2007. The popularity of bariatric surgery has led to an increasing population of post-bariatric patients who now require body contouring surgery for all the excess skin. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 66,000 body contouring procedures were performed in 2006. 

The current mainstay of bariatric surgery procedures requires a dramatic reduction of food consumption by means of restricted food intake, malabsorption of the food, or a combination of both interventions. The two most common bariatric surgeries are the laparoscopic adjustable banding (LAGB) and the roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP). LAGB is a restrictive procedure in which a small stomach pouch is created, so the person becomes full quicker and eats less. The RYGBP procedure involves both restrictive and malabsorptive components. Generally, weight loss surgeries produce weight loss within a year after surgery, which is three to four times superior to what can be achieved through non-surgical weight management programs. More importantly, most of the individual's weight loss is maintained for many years.
