What is Sports Medicine?

Sports medicine deals primarily with injuries of the rotator cuff, meniscus, tennis elbow, and other sports-related issues.

Rotator Cuff Tears. A rotator cuff tear is an injury in which the tissues connecting muscle to bone around the shoulder joint break apart. This injury is usually sustained from too much repetitive motion of the shoulder. If you have this injury, the best method of treatment is usually an arthroscopic surgery. Arthroscopic surgeries are the least invasive and usually performed as outpatient procedures.

Meniscus Tears. A meniscus tear occurs when a person twists or turns too quickly, with a bent knee and planted foot. The tear takes place in the cartilage of the knee and can also occur from playing sports or heavy lifting. A meniscus injury can be repaired either from physical therapy or surgery, depending on the severity of injury.

Tennis Elbow. Also known as lateral epicondylitis, this condition is caused by overuse of the elbow. Its nickname derives from the fact that it is often obtained from playing tennis or other sports that involve repetitive arm movement. Treatment for this injury often includes rest, pain relievers, or a physical therapy routine.
