It is best to rest your ankle and let it heal in the beginning. If you recently sprained it, you should ice it, and let it rest. Try not to put a lot of weight on it. If it doesn't feel better within a few weeks, its best to see your doctor to see if therapy is needed.
If you don't, the most important thing to do immediately on day one is isometric exercises (the ankle doesn't move) isometric exercises do not cause ligament inflammation so they are safe to do right away.
