The history of orthodontics can be traced back to ancient times when various civilizations experimented with methods to improve dental alignment. Archaeological evidence reveals that the ancient Egyptians used metal bands around their teeth to correct dental discrepancies, while the Etruscans, an ancient Italian civilization, employed gold wire to stabilize teeth. However, it was the ancient Greeks who first laid the foundation for orthodontics as we know it today. The renowned physician Hippocrates and philosopher Aristotle both made observations and recommendations for treating dental irregularities.

Fast forward to the 18th century, and significant advancements were made in the field of orthodontics. Pierre Fauchard, a French dentist often referred to as the "Father of Modern Dentistry," introduced the bandeau, a device made of precious metal that expanded the dental arch. Fauchard's work laid the groundwork for future developments in orthodontic appliances.

In the 19th century, dentists and orthodontists began experimenting with various devices and techniques to correct teeth misalignments. One notable figure during this time was Norman W. Kingsley, an American dentist who advocated for the use of rubber bands to apply force to move teeth into their correct positions. Kingsley's work helped establish the concept of applying controlled pressure to guide tooth movement.

However, it was in the early 20th century that orthodontics truly began to take shape as a specialized field. Edward H. Angle, an American dentist often called the "Father of Modern Orthodontics," made significant contributions to the field by developing the first classification system for malocclusions and introducing a wide range of appliances to correct them. Angle's classification system and techniques formed the basis for modern orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Traditional metal braces, consisting of brackets, wires, and elastics, became the standard orthodontic treatment in the mid-20th century. While effective, metal braces were often visible and could cause discomfort and difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene. Patients were eager for a more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable alternative.

The breakthrough in orthodontic treatment came in the late 1990s with the introduction of clear aligners. Zia Chishti, an adult orthodontic patient himself, collaborated with Kelsey Wirth to develop the first clear aligner system, which they named Invisalign. Invisalign utilized a series of custom-made, transparent plastic aligners to gradually move teeth into their desired positions. This innovative approach allowed patients to straighten their teeth discreetly, without the need for traditional braces.

Clear aligners offer several advantages over traditional braces. Firstly, they are virtually invisible, making them a popular choice for individuals concerned about the appearance of metal braces. Secondly, clear aligners are removable, enabling patients to eat, drink, brush, and floss with ease, reducing the risk of oral health problems. The absence of brackets and wires also means fewer visits to the orthodontist for adjustments.

Since the introduction of Invisalign, other clear aligner systems have emerged, providing patients with additional options for orthodontic treatment. These systems use advanced technology, such as 3D imaging and computer-aided design, to create customized aligners that fit snugly over the teeth, exerting gentle pressure to guide them into alignment.
