What Is Cardiothoracic Surgery?

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, including the heart, lungs, and esophagus. The most common surgeries include mitral valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, and aortic valve surgery.

Mitral Valve Surgery can either repair or replace the mitral valve in your heart. If the mitral valve is hardened (calcified), this prevents blood from moving forward through the valve and may require surgery. You may also need surgery if the mitral valve is too loose, causing blood to flow backward. Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery is an effective procedure performed through several small incisions.

Heart Bypass Surgery is the most common type of heart surgery performed on adults. Heart bypass surgery is recommended when one or more of the blood vessels that transport blood to the heart muscles become partially blocked. This surgery reduces the risk of having a heart attack and can ease symptoms of coronary artery disease, such as chest pain.

Aortic Valve Surgery is performed to treat bicuspid valves, other congenital aortic valve diseases, aortic valve stenosis, and aortic valve regurgitation. Aortic valve surgery can help restore normal blood flow, reduce symptoms, prolong life, and help preserve the function of your heart muscle.
