The journey to preventing and overcoming disease begins with the 4 serious health issues facing our society today. It is important to understand the underlying causes and contributing factors to these health issues to prevent or overcome
These four serious health issues that we are facing as a society today, are, unfortunately, on the increase and not the decrease. To prevent or cure a health issue or disease, you must first get a clear understanding of the underlying cause or causes.
It is a well-known fact that we are living in a very toxic environment when it comes to synthetic products, chemicals and fragrances used in household cleaning, skin and hair care products, not to mention the increase in consumption of fast, packaged and processed foods that are full of harmful chemicals and artificial product.
It is by minimizing and where possible eliminating these products and fragrances in our everyday living environment, that we can begin to get a handle on preventing and overcoming these serious health issues.
These toxic chemicals and fragrances are found in your fresh or fruity shampoo, and body lotion and even your laundry detergent can be riddled with toxic ingredients. These harmful synthetic products are most commonly listed on the labels are “fragrance/s.”
It is when a company uses the word fragrance on a label, there’s an underlying reason. It’s specifically to hide harmful and chemical-laden ingredients that can put your health at risk. This term, along with “parfum” can be used in place of around 3,000 different ingredients!
4 Serious Health Issues Linked to these Synthetic Products & Fragrances
1. Cancer
Breast Cancer Prevention Partners lists avoiding synthetic fragrances as one of the top ways to help prevent breast cancer. Many synthetic scents are hormone disruptors. A group of chemicals known as phthalates have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and developmental toxicity. These synthetic fragrances are commonly used in cosmetics and household products.
A few of the known side effects of these phthalates are –
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Infertility in men and women
- Asthma
- Worsening allergy symptoms
- Obesity
- Early onset of puberty
- Insulin resistance in adolescence
2. Allergic Reactions
It is commonly thought that the main cause of allergies and allergic reactions is flowers, and various food types, however, the danger element when it comes to allergies and allergic reactions come from chemical compounds and fragrances. Fragrances rank among the top five allergens in the world.
Allergic reactions to fragrances and chemicals found in cleaning products, skincare, and packaged, fast and processed food are the major cause of allergic reactions that include headaches, migraines, difficulty breathing and sinus irritation.
Studies have shown that allergies, sinus problems, migraines and asthma have increased dramatically in recent years. Many scientists believe there is a link between the increased use of synthetic fragrances and chemicals found in these products This is the reason for the increase in these allergic conditions and serious health issues.
3. Asthma
An asthma attack can easily be brought on by people who suffer from asthma when exposed to synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals. This can include perfume, deodorants, cologne, skin, body care products and processed foods.
As there is an accumulation of the toxic chemical load with being subjected to these products, it can induce breathing difficulties and worsen symptoms. Products that contain artificial chemicals, such as packaged, processed foods. Synthetic fragrances and chemicals found in skin, hair and cleaning products should be avoided.
4. Autism
Research conducted at the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center found that phthalates are linked to autism, symptoms of ADHD and neurological disorders. When pregnant women are exposed to phthalates, they may be extremely toxic to a developing foetus.
It is also believed that perfumes and cosmetics may be important factors in the pathogenesis of autistic spectrum disorder. Synthetic perfumes have gained global utility not only as perfumes but also as essential chemicals in detergents, cosmetics, soap, and a wide variety of commonly used items, even in food flavouring to enhance product taste. Here we provide evidence that a majority of perfumes are highly mutagenic at femtomolar concentrations and cause significant neuromodulations in human neuroblastoma cells at extremely low levels of concentration, levels that are expected to reach a developing foetal brain if the pregnant mothers are exposed to these chemicals.
As you can see, where the real danger lies is that there is a build-up in your body of these synthetic and chemical substances from a variety of sources. These main sources that you and I have some level of control over being in the products we use and the food we eat. By minimizing the amount of toxic overload that is entering your body either via your skin and bloodstream or the digestive process. You will not only be helping to prevent these serious health issues but making changes to natural products, and fresh foods will allow you to live a healthier, happier life.
How to begin Decreasing your Exposure to Synthetic Products and Fragrances
1: Use Natural and Safe Skin Care and Hair Products –Learn more about Beauty Products that will cause harm and how to eliminate them here!
2: Keep your house clean “Naturally” is a non-artificial fragrance that is free, easy to use and economical. Begin by opening windows, regularly vacuuming, dusting, and washing bench tops, skirtings and floors. This can be done easily with a solution of bicarb, borax, freshly squeezed lemon and white vinegar.
- All you have to do is — Add a quarter cup of each of the dry ingredients, then the lemon juice, and 2 cups of white vinegar in a large bowl allowing for the fizz of these ingredients. Once the fizz has subsided pour this mixture into a spray bottle and clean away. You could double the mixture, having half in a spray bottle and the other half in a bottle that you can use to add to your mop bucket.
This mixture is not only great for cleaning your house, including glass surfaces and windows, but it is also great for cleaning your clothes. With a regular wash, you would use a quarter of a cup of the solution. If it is a dirty wash, you would first soak the clothes, then drain the water and repeat the solution for a complete wash.
- Magic Erasers are genius little sponges that remove marks like ink and crayon from walls, tiles, you name it. They’re made of a microfibre that lifts and traps dirt without chemicals or detergent.
- Switch to Microfibre Clothes for Cleaning — Microfibre is a man-made fibre smaller than a strand of silk (VERY small!). Microfibre cleaning cloths are so effective at removing dirt that you don’t need to use detergents and other chemicals to get things spotless.
- Make your scouring powder with 2 parts baking soda, 1 part salt, and 1 part Borax. It will cut through even the toughest scum. You can use this solution for cleaning your oven, take out racks and soak separately, and apply as a paste the baking soda, salt and borax to cool the oven base, top and sides. Leave overnight, then rinse off, the next day. If your oven hasn’t been cleaned for a while you may need to apply and repeat this, a couple more times.
The best advice I can give you when it comes to having an allergy and chemically-free home is to clean up as you go, keeping it simple and easy. If you want to add a fragrance, use naturally derived essential oils such as lavender, orange, lemon, peppermint, neroli, and sandalwood. These are all great for giving your home a fresh natural smell, that will not cause any health issues.
