General Colin Powell died today from SARS, he was 84 years old. My late sister Pearl had taught him at Morris HS in The Bronx way back when. She had reported him to be a marginal student at best. That was before he became entranced by ROTC and military discipline and order. A lifelong Republican, he became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and ultimately Secretary of State. He renounced his role in the ousting of Saddam Hussein and the notion of regime building as a counter to the spreading of Communism and supported Obama's second presidential run. We need no additional reminders of the omnipresence of the pandemic. We continue to be alarmed by the politicizing of the disaster and the elevation of party loyalty over life concerns.
