I have treated many women for all of the symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), including severe headaches that get so bad they cause nausea, lower back pain, mood swings, food cravings, fatigue, heavy bleeding, as well as irregularities with menstrual cycles.

While many women today have come to believe that it is normal to have all of these horrible symptoms every month, in Traditional Chinese Medicine these symptoms all mean that some thing is out of balance within the woman's body. And the good news is that all of it can be kept under control naturally with acupuncture.

Many people are hesitant to try acupuncture because of fear of needles, but don't worry, the acupuncture needles are much skinnier and smaller than medical needles. Most of the time people don't even feel the needles, but it is common to have one or two where you may feel a pinch when inserted and then you may feel a heavy feeling around certain acupuncture points during the treatment session. This is normal. Commonly, there are a couple needles inserted close to the wrists and then a few needles inserted on the lower legs and ankles to help balance the energy flow, which helps balance the hormones of the woman's body. Once all the needles are inserted into these points,  they are left in for half an hour to give time to help the body's energy flow adjust. During this time, you can just close your eyes and relax! This is something that is lacking in our modern lifestyle, which contributes to our imbalances.

It is common during the initial acupuncture questioning to be asked a lot of questions about what you eat and drink. It is really beneficial to you as a patient to answer these questions honestly so that your acupuncturist can help you identify certain foods or drinks that may be contributing to your health imbalances. I have noticed that sometimes my acupuncture clients may feel embarrassed to admit what they eat or drink and so may deny altogether something that is actually the main contributor to their problem. That will only make it take longer to resolve the issue.

If you are a woman experiencing PMS and all of the possible side effects that can sometimes accompany that time of the month, just know that it is possible to find relief from all of these symptoms through natural means, especially acupuncture. Acupuncture is highly effective when dealing with PMS. Many of my female clients can testify to this.
