Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that connects two or more spinal bones to restrict movement & alleviate pain. The surgeon inserts bone or a bone-like material between the spinal bones, often using metal plates, screws, or rods to facilitate fusion.

Why it's done: Spinal fusion aims to enhance spine stability, correct deformities or reduce pain. It addresses issues such as scoliosis, instability due to degeneration or stabilization after disc removal.

Risks: Although uncommon, spinal fusion carries potential risks; infection, poor wound healing, bleeding, blood clots, nerve or vessel injury, pain at the graft site & symptom recurrence.

Results: Spinal fusion is effective for fractures, scoliosis & stability but less successful with addressing the causes of back pain or radiating pain. It may not prevent future pain, especially in arthritis cases. Immobilizing the spine has been shown to accelerate degeneration of adjacent joints, leading to future pain & surgeries.

Alternatives: Spinal decompression therapy is a safe, effective & affordable way to treat low back & neck pain due to herniated or bulging discs. By using a sophisticated, computerized system that induces targeted traction onto the spine; it alleviates pressure on discs & nerves, eliminating pain & promoting natural healing.
