There are several reasons that you can suddenly have a stiff neck. Has there been any resent trauma, falls, or bumps on the head? If none of these apply, then it's related to stress positions. As stress position is when you hold a position for an extended period of time with fatigues the muscles on the side of the neck that has been stressed. This creates a "pain, spasm, pain" cycle causing what would seem to be a sudden stiff neck.
