Research Shows Air Pollution Can Be a Possible Trigger for Multiple Sclerosis Relapse

Research into environmental factors

Located in Rennes, France, the French School of Public Health has taken on the task of trying to understand environmental factors affecting multiple sclerosis. A team of investigators is using an urban air dispersion model known as the Atmospheric Dispersion Modeling System to evaluate various measurements of air pollution, land and surface roughness, and emission inventories.

The researchers wanted to consider how air pollution might contribute to multiple sclerosis relapses. This is because there have been seasonal patterns and variations seen in multiple sclerosis patients but nobody knows why that is. It’s completely plausible that something with a seasonal nature, such as air pollution, could influence relapse risk for multiple sclerosis.
