Tips for Properly Bathing, Dressing and Grooming Alzheimer's Patients

Tips for dressing patients

Caregivers should keep in mind that patients with Alzheimer’s take more time to put on clothes. Choosing clothes can also be difficult for them. They might select clothes not suitable for the weather or clothes that have an extreme contrast of colors. Moreover, they may forget to wear an important piece of clothing. However, if possible, let the patient be independent in choosing which clothes to wear.

Things to do when dressing the patient:

  • The clothes should be arranged in order. For example, the underwear should be placed first, the second is a pair of trousers and the third is a shirt.
  • The caregiver must give the clothing items one by one, or guide the patient on what to do with the clothes.
  • The patient must not feel overwhelmed with choosing clothes, so the caregiver must have 1 or 2 outfits ready to be worn in the patient’s closet.
  • The closet can be kept locked for safety purposes.
  • Clothes that are loose, socks and underwear made of cotton, and pants and shorts that are garterized are advisable for patients to wear.
  • Patients should not wear tight pieces of clothing and high heels since these are uncomfortable.
  • For clothing and accessories with buttons, buckles, or shoelaces, using Velcro tape or big zippers is recommended. The shoes should not slide off easily either.
