Understanding Racism in Nursing and Medicine
Although it is something that can seem like a thing of the past, there are still issues of racism that are very evident in the world of today. This is not just something that is being heard simply fifty or sixty years ago. This is an issue that needs addressed and is actually not a secret. This is something that is actually very common among different hospitals and can take place all around! While those who are facing these issues sometimes remain quiet, having a safe place to turn to is of great importance. Racism and sexism are both wrong and vile, something that is unbelievable for some to imagine in the year 2017 and something that will continue to remain an issue until this awful mindset is truly erased.
There have even been plenty of cases of those who say they do not wanted a nurse of a certain color or background giving them treatment! This is absolutely wrong and not be stood for upon any grounds. Racism is still very evident in this day and age. It is something that needs to be addressed. Some hospitals will even go through with these awful requests.
These nurses are wanting to please the person they are looking after and want to protect those that they work for. This is something that can cause a great area of concern, but can be a huge issue for those who are facing the racism. There are videos that have went viral over this matter and continue to arise in this day and age. There have been plenty of reports by those who have watched these videos and can attest to the fact that this happens on a daily basis in all different types of settings. Issues like this are happening all around the globe.
There are certain notes to be taken in Canada and the United States of America. Both of these countries have problems with racism that need to be addressed. There is certainly no secret to the amount of racism that those with these issues are facing on a daily basis or whenever the situation occurs for some individuals. There have been studies done by official university individuals that have focused on the issues at hand. There are certain types of polls and other types of research that have been done. It seems as if most people prefer a doctor of their own race, according to a study conducted by those at John Hopkins University in 2004.
Racism and sexism in a healthcare setting
Racism and sexism are found throughout different settings, especially in the healthcare setting. Racism is something that is very real among those who are among those in a minority group. Discrimination in healthcare is something that needs to be addressed, giving insight into what will bring people better together instead of the hate that is racism.
Studies related to the mind have been done to learn about these racial views. There are different ways of going about this in treatment, although understanding the social area of this remains of great importance. There are cases among those who are finding out things that they didn’t know were racist. Although racism can appear as a bigoted person who is being upfront and outright racist, sometimes it can come from people who do not know they are doing it.
Addressing these issues at their core is something that should be certainly considered for those who are facing different types of racism. There is no select area that one should be grouped into. Racism and discrimination based upon sex is something that is a large issue. There are also those in the LGBTQ community that are also of color that experience discrimination in either fashion.
There are different causes for this that need to be addressed, with different groups trying to reach out to those who have happened to be affected by the ugly head that is racism and overall discrimination. Having to reassure a patient about the race of somebody and the job that they can do is something that is of great importance. There are also causes in where nurses are discriminated against because of their religion and religious garment allowances that they have a right to wear in any setting. This problem is still being something that is on the mind of those who are facing these awful matters of racism and similar concerns. While there is most certainly no clear answer as to what can solve this, there are different views on the matter about overcoming racism and getting rid of it from society. Those who happen to be racist should look for ways to undo this belief. Asking where this belief came from is important and it can help to see what they can do to address it. Knowing that these attitudes and mindsets are unhealthy is something that is very important for those who want to make changes.
Knowing how to look at these events and what to look for in the situation is vital to overall understanding. It is very important to respect each person and understand that they are facing issues based upon their experiences having to do with racism and discrimination based upon their status. This is something that different groups can help people achieve. Knowing that respect is important, along with an open-mind, is something that help those have better peace with one another in any setting.
Sometimes, there are those who face ill treatment just because of their race in an emergency situation. This can cause great concern for those who are afraid of getting the right treatment based upon their skin color and the interactions that they have faced before. Minorities are not treated with the respect they deserve in these situations. In fact, there are studies that have shown facts concerning minorities receiving improper treatment.
This can lead to a worsening of the illness or not addressing a problem soon enough. All of these issues can be addressed with someone, but this does not mean that they will be talked about. It is something that is still an open secret that is not addressed by the number of people that it deserves to be. There have been health notes relating to these mistreatments that date back well into the 1980’s as far as official data is concerned. These issues have been going on far longer than that, however.
Just because an issue is just now gaining light does not mean that it has not been an issue beforehand. While there are certain people working on these issues, it will still continue to remain an issue until serious change is made over the problems of racism and discrimination. Healthcare professionals are indeed meant to give equal treatment to all of those they are treating, granted this does not always happen.
Reporting an issue should be something that is done when faced with racism in the healthcare setting or anywhere. Implicit bias is something that can happen even for those who might not believe that they are racist. Finding out just how to eradicate these issues from society is one that is deserving of upmost addressing when it comes to solving important issues.
