2.41 D Dimer. No blood clot found on CT w/ Contrast?

I went to the ER with chest pains. They were positional in the middle of my chest. They ran a blood test (D Dimer) and it was 2.41. They then did a CT with contrast and it came back totally normal. All my other blood tests were fine, EKG was fine. My primary provider did say I had elevated liver enzymes or a fatty liver, could that be a reason why my D Dimer was elevated? I was discharged from the hospital and sent home with a prescription for Prevacid. They think I have GERD. I just wanted to know if this sounded right.

Fatty liver causes high liver enzymes, but not a high D dimer. By history, your pain was not cardiac in origin, but was more likely secondary to your chest wall, sternum, or thoracic cage. Your doctors wanted to make sure that the pain was not from the heart, so they ordered the D Dimer, but the result is rather meaningless because 1) it was not done in the right context (i.e., someone with high risk for heart attack or clots); and 2) the elevation is not specific for clotting and can be caused by other things. Bottom line: don't worry about it.
