Alcohol and Prozac/Wellbutrin?

I know it is generally not recommended to consume alcohol while taking these medications or to do so in small quantities, but how bad is it? I don’t drink often (1-2 times a week) and haven’t drank since I started taking these medications. I’m on Prozac and Wellbutrin for depression/anxiety. How bad would it be to have a few drinks one night a week?

Hello, The current medication that you are taking can cause side effects of dizziness, excessive sleepiness, abnormal dreams, exacerbate your current conditions and other adverse reactions. With alcohol it can potentiate or increase side effects, alter your ability to problem solve, think clearly, cause a decrease in respirations, alter how well your medications are working, and so on. It is not safe to mix alcohol or any substance with prescribed medications. If you want to have an occasional drink you should not take the medications at the same time you are having a drink. There should be a large time gap of 68 hours between taking prescribed medications and drinking alcohol, but this does not mean you will not have any side effects or risks. My recommendation is do not drink alcohol while taking medications. Thank you NP Williams
Thanks for the question. The combination of these medicines and alcohol is not very well studied. However, I don’t see any issue with one or two drinks periodically.
