Blood in the brain.

Hello, my mother was diagnosed with ruptured aneurysm. The first phase and second phase of surgery is successful, but it was stated that not all excess blood from the rupture of aneurysm is removed. It was stated that the remaining excess blood is not removed during the first phase of the surgery and the surgeon stated that the body will naturally flush out the remaining blood, however my mother will stay in the ICU for a longer time until confirmation. Is it true that the remaining blood will be naturally flushed out from the blood?

Yes it will likely be absorbed. This can take months to occur, and usually a CT scan is done periodically to monitor the progress. A second concern is for you, any siblings you have and any siblings of your mother: it is recommended that all first degree relatives of a patient with cerebral aneurysms be screened for the possibility that they may have an aneurysm also. Usually this is done with an MRI, and no dye injection is needed. Leon Rosenberg
It is common sometimes after an intracranial bleed to have some residual blood that is left over. Sometimes it's more dangerous trying to get it all out. With time it should reabsorb and a small portion may calcify which is also a common happening. Keeping your mom in the ICU for a bit longer is a wise precaution to make sure there's no leakage of blood and that she'll be fine. Good luck to you and your mom. Dr. F. Sent from AOL on Android
