Unless you are allergic to the dye, or the iodine content in the dye, your body will naturally absorb it, digest it, metabolize it and finally excrete it out of your body. Now if you do have an adverse or an allergic reaction to the content level then this may cause some damage depending on the intensity or severity of your reaction. Allergic reactions may range from flushing, swelling, and/or itching, to more serious symptoms like vomiting or going into anaphylaxis because you cannot breath. Remember you can always ask your primary care doctor, local health care professionals and the administering doctor for a test prior to the scan to see if you will have any adverse or allergic reactions to the dye, this way they can test before they administer a full dose. Hope this helps!
An MRI, a type of computerized imaging that uses a giant magnet, can possibly cause eye damage if there are metal fragments in a person’s eye(s). A CT scan uses X-rays, and cannot cause eye damage.
Yes, CT scan dye, also known as contrast material, can cause side effects in some people. However, these side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Here are some common side effects:
Mild Reactions:
Nausea
Vomiting
Headache
Itching
Flushing (feeling warm)
Mild skin rash or hives
Severe Reactions:
These are rare but can be serious and include:
Allergic reactions: These can range from mild symptoms like hives to severe reactions like anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.
Kidney problems: In some cases, the contrast material can damage the kidneys, especially in people with pre-existing kidney problems.
To minimize the risk of side effects:
Inform your doctor about any allergies or medical conditions you have, especially kidney problems or a history of allergic reactions to contrast dye.
Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any medications you need to take before or after the CT scan.
Stay hydrated after the procedure to help flush the contrast material out of your system.
If you experience any severe side effects after a CT scan with contrast, seek immediate medical attention.
