Yes, patients with high myopia can absolutely live a normal life without ever having refractive surgery to correct their vision. They will however be dependent on glasses and/or contact lenses to function. While glasses have certain visual limitations, they are definitely safer than contact lenses. Highly nearsighted patients select LASIK for vision correction for many reasons, some due to a feeling of vulnerability, or a need for improved safety, other for sports or for self confidence. In my career, I have listened to so very many patient stories and many are based upon very personal experiences. Each patient must simply make their own decision about which vision correction method they select but every highly myopic patient should have a yearly dilated eye examination to ensure the health of their retina.
Yes you cal lead a normal life with high myopia. you need to keep routine eye examinations. Be careful to look for the warning symptoms of retinal detachment Floater flashing light or feeling of a veil or curtain blocking vision . If you get these symptoms it is best to see a retina specialist. Being a high myope it would be a good idea to get a baseline exam from a retina specialist.
High myopia can cause retinal breaks , tears , holes or detachments . It’s always good to get your eyes dilated and getting the retina checked at least annually .
