Can astigmatism go away?

I was diagnosed with astigmatism. Can astigmatism go away?

Hi:) It is possible for astigmatism to go away, depending on the cause.

For example, if it was caused by inflammation, or excessive rubbing of the eye, which can happen during allergy season - once the inflammation is treated, the astigmatism could improve.

If the astigmatism is a part of your natural prescription, it usually stays the same over time. The reason is, that in this case, astigmatism is caused because the eye is oval shaped, (like a football) rather than being perfectly round (like a tennis ball). The eye shape is what causes you to have astigmatism in your prescription, so unless you change the shape of the eye ie with a procedure like lasik, there would be no change. Hope this helps!
