Pneumonia is an infection of the air space sacs in the lungs. This type of infection can be caused by viruses or by bacteria. A child’s immune system can effectively fight off some viral pneumonias without specific treatment. However, because of the location of the infection, a child with pneumonia should be under the care of a medical provider. A medical provider generally will listen to the lungs, watch to see how the child is breathing, check oxygen saturation levels and make a determination of when the child should be seen again to check for worsening or improvement. If your child hasn’t been evaluated by a medical provider, that’s an important step. If you notice your child has worsening symptoms like fast or heavy breathing, decreasing energy levels, or inability to keep well hydrated, those are reasons to seek care quickly. Hope she feels better soon!
