Can diabetics be sedated?

I have type 2 diabetes and will have surgery under general anesthesia. Can diabetics be sedated?

The quick answer is yes. They will obtain labs during pre-op and again on the day of surgery to confirm you’re within acceptable ranges to safely undergo sedation. It’s important to follow your surgeons and anesthesiologists guidelines leading up to and after the surgery, as having diabetes does increase the risk of problems such as delayed healing. Also, if you also have sleep apnea and wear a CPAP ask your anesthesiologist if they would like you to bring that with you on the day of surgery.
We operate on diabetics under sedation or other forms of anesthesia all the time.

Sedation can be used in any patient, but it may not be the appropriate type of anesthesia depending on the kind of surgery you are having.
Yes, they give insulin to lower the blood sugar if needed.
